Amil and the After
Reviews
In the book Amil and the After by Veera Hiranandani, I liked the main character, Amil, most. Amil draws pictures of things for his deceased mother, and he tells stories using those drawings that he made of himself, his family, and items. I found it interesting that Amil chooses to tell his stories using drawings, which paint a picture in the reader’s mind. Other kids should read this book because it shows Amil’s resilient spirit, and that he tries to find hope for his family in a newly-reformed nation. This book made me feel curious about what was going to happen next in the story, as the book focuses on the struggles of Amil and his family and Amil trying to adjust to things. The book is historical-fiction, as Amil and his family are fictional, and the setting is based on a real-life event. I think that young people should read this because it shows how sudden events can change people and their lives.

I think that Amil and the After is an extraordinary book to read. My favorite character is Nisha, Amil’s twin sister because she loves to write and I can relate to her a lot. My favorite part of the story is when Amil and Nisha’s uncle take them to the cinema. It’s a great part because they get to have a lot of fun and it is an emotional part in the book. Amil and the After is a mysterious, compelling and very enjoyable book and I would recommend it for 5th and 6th graders.
